In the spirit of Section 29 of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement and pursuant to the Act respecting Northern Villages and the Kativik Regional Government, the mission of the Sustainable Employment Department is to provide tools for employment in the context of Inuit economic and social development. Since 1992, this mission has progressively led the Department to assume responsibility for the delivery of related federal and provincial government programs. The Department’s activities are divided into three sections:
- Employment and income support.
- Workforce and youth programs.
Funding for the Department’s operations and activities is received from the Government of Canada through agreements with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), as well as from the Québec government through the Partnership Agreement on Economic and Community Development in Nunavik (Sanarrutik Agreement), the Agreement concerning Block Funding for the Kativik Regional Government (Sivunirmut Agreement) and a certain number of specific agreements.
