Justice in Nunavik
The Department and the Kativik Regional Police Force have participated on the Working Group on Justice in Nunavik since its creation in 2008, along with the Makivik Corporation, the Ministère de la Justice du Québec and the Ministère de la Sécurité publique. The mandate of the Working Group is to analyze various issues and propose recommendations on how to improve access to justice and the administration of justice and correctional services. To date, it has in particular made recommendations concerning the creation of permanent court staff positions on the Hudson coast, the creation of a permanent judge position in Nunavik, the construction of adequate court infrastructure in the communities, increased funding for local justice committees on justice issues, and the implementation of social regulation initiatives through the Saqijuq Project. In addition, the Department sits on various committees, including the Advisory Committee for the Nunavik Community Justice Center, the Aboriginal Socio-Judicial Forum, and the CAVAC Aboriginal Committee.
