Press Release: Nunavik Cost-of-Living Reduction Measures

Kuujjuaq, Québec, July 1, 2015 – The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) and the Makivik Corporation today added camping fuel and snowmobile oil to the list of items covered under the Food and Other Essentials Program, one of the six Nunavik Cost-of-Living Reduction Measures. A 30% discount will be applied to these new items.

Press Release: On the Water this Summer, Think Safety First!

Kuujjuaq, Québec, June 15, 2015 – Every summer, Nunavimmiut take to the region’s lakes, rivers and coastal areas for hunting and fishing activities. The region’s waterways are a part of the northern way of life. The Civil Security Section of the Kativik Regional Government (KRG) and the Nunavik Hunting Fishing and Trapping Association (Anguviaq) are proud to kick off the summer season with a boat safety campaign. This week, various initiatives are planned to raise awareness and promote safe behaviour on and around the water. Listen to your local and regional FM radio stations for safety tips and other information to be well-prepared for boating.

Nunivaat was initiated by the Kativik Regional Government (KRG) in 2005 to
establish a permanent, public and independent statistics program on the
socioeconomic situation of Nunavik
. Nunivaat is directed by Université Laval.


Study on the Cost of Living in Nunavik – The main survey to collect raw data for this study is now being implemented. During the first quarter of 2015, 64 households were surveyed in Kuujjuaq, Tasiujaq, Salluit and Kangiqsualujjuaq. By the end of April, an additional 25 households are expected to have been surveyed and, in May and June, surveying is planned in Puvirnituq and Umiujaq. Under the Agreement on the Financing of Measures to Reduce the Cost of Living in Nunavik signed in 2013, the Makivik Corporation, the KRG and the Québec government made a commitment to use the results of this study to define effective and long-term solutions to the region’s high cost of living. The results of the study are expected to be ready for release by the middle of 2016.

Press Release: Nunavik Kite-Ski Championship: Riding the Winds in Kangiqsujuaq!

Kuujjuaq, Québec, May 8, 2015 – Nunavik kite-skiers took over Kangiqsujuaq from April 29 to May 3 as the Recreation Department of the Kativik Regional Government (KRG), in collaboration with the Northern Village of Kangiqsujuaq, hosted the fourth annual Nunavik Kite-Ski Championship. This year, Michael Petagumskum from Kuujjuaq won the title of Nunavik Kite-Ski champion. He was followed by Tommy Tuniq from Kangirsujuaq in second place and Quppa Pinguartuq from Salluit in third place.

Press Release: Weekends in the Parks Pilot Project: Come Spend the Summer with Us!

Kuujjuaq, Québec, May 5, 2015 – The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) and Nunavik Parks are inviting Nunavimmiut to participate in the Weekends in the Parks Pilot Project, taking place this summer in the region’s national parks! Nine affordable weekend packages are being offered at 500 $ or less, for trips to Parc national des Pingualuit, Parc national Kuururjuaq and Parc national Tursujuq.

The packages include transportation to the parks by air charter or boat, guides, lodging or camping and, in the case of Tursujuq, food as well.
